Masami “Pearls” are not pearls at all. Masami beads are made from the waste shell of mollusks. They are cut from the shell and polished.
It’s amazing what men have done through the ages to try to duplicate the natural beauty of the pearl. Glass beads coated with a slurry of fish scales called "essence d'oriente”, “Roman Pearls” wax filled glass beads, and enameled balls are all attempts to duplicate the beauty created by the oyster.
At one time, before cultivation, natural pearls were so rare that fake pearls made sense; but, today with the beauty and really reasonable pricing, freshwater pearls (real pearls) are a much better investment.
