South Sea Pearls

Pearl strands have always been popular and probably will always be popular. But strands of large glowing, round, high quality South Sea Pearls can be very expensive. One of the ways designers bring these pearls within reach of customers means is to offer pendants.

These are some of the rarest, most valuable pearls available and range from 9mm to 20mm in size making them the largest pearls available.  Much larger than the average pearl, the smoothness and roundness of these pearls are exceptional. These are the rarest and extraordinary pearls you'll find in jewelry.
The largest of the pearls, Pinctata Maxima, is a good name for the largest of the oysters that are used to culture pearls. Because of the rarity and sensitivity of this type of oyster, cultivation of these pearls is much more difficult, making them more expensive.
This oyster can grow to 12 inches across the shell. That is really big compared to the akoya oyster which ranges in size of 3 inches to 5 inches. This large size oyster not only grows to be the biggest oyster; but, also grows the largest pearl. Generally speaking this oysters pearl sizes are marketed from the smallest of 9mm on up to about 20mm.
This rare solitary oyster only exists on an extremely limited number of shell beds found in the warm tropical seas. This area of ocean stretches from North Australia, through Indonesia, the Philippines, to the southern tip of Burma.
