This oyster can grow to 12 inches across the shell. That is really big compared to the akoya oyster which ranges in size of 3 inches to 5 inches. Generally speaking this oysters pearl sizes are marketed from the smallest of 9mm on up to about 20mm.
This rare solitary oyster only exists on an extremely limited number of shell beds found in the warm tropical seas. This area of ocean stretches from North Australia, through Indonesia, the Philippines, to the southern tip of Burma.
